Mere months after Mozart's death it was Domenico Cimarosa's The Secret Marriage that was the talk of Vienna, proving more popular than any of Mozart's operas. It is a tale of class rivalries, marriageable sisters, and a pompous English Count that sits comfortably in the comic opera tradition between Mozart and Rossini.

Opera double bill
Purcell - Dido and Aeneas
Maxwell Davies - The Lighthouse
Sir Jack Lyons Theatre, The Royal Academy of Music

The evening opens with one of the cornerstones of baroque opera and a progenitor of the English operatic tradition; Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas tells the tragic story of the Queen of Carthage’s love for the last Prince of Troy and her despair when he abandons her at the command of the gods.

Following the world premiere of his Kommilitonen! in 2011, RAO stages Maxwell Davies’s most-performed opera, a mysterious and supernatural psychological thriller based on a true story of the unexplained disappearance of three lighthouse keepers.
